3-Day Workshop, January 15 - 17 from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Adults - Ages 18+
Skill Level: Beginner to intermediate; no prior experience is necessary

REQUIRED: $140 tools and materials fee for instructor to provide blocks, polyfilm, u-gouges, brayer, baren and 2 artist knives per student to use and take home. This fee can be adjusted for students who already own items or wish to purchase their own items themselves. Payable to instructor by first day of class, by cash, check, or Venmo. 

Learn the basics of woodblock printing from artist Ben Bohnsack in this three-day workshop. You will learn all of the printmaking fundamentals, including: designing images for printing, transferring images from blocks, carving, reduction printing, layering, stenciling, matting, and so much more. The goal of this class will be to create a woodcut in an edition of 6-8 original prints using 9x12 blocks and 2-4 colors.

I make woodblock prints (woodcuts) inspired by landscapes, creatures and human enterprises in our world, subjects I have experienced at home in Michigan and other places. It is my way of saying that these things are valuable - they truly matter! As you see them I hope that you will think so too. While most of my multicolor relief prints are representational, more recently I am also enjoying abstract expressions of life in our times. I use plant-based inks which are environmentally friendly, printing both by hand and with a press, holding a strong commitment to this ancient art in its simplest form. Without an art degree, my art career began during retirement through workshops and university classes.

Having completed over a hundred multicolor relief prints, my work has achieved countless awards, exhibitions, and gallery shows. I teach workshops and have been artist-in-residence at Mackinac Island, Homestead National Historical Park, Seney National Wildlife Refuge, Bonifas Arts Center, and Olepangi Farm in Kenya. Recently moving from Marquette, I now live in Ann Arbor where my art is an important focus, along with family, friends and community.

Cancellation & Class Policies

Cancellation Policy for Traverse City Classes (In-Person)

Student Withdrawal
Requests for cancellation by the student at least seven (7) days prior to the first day of class will be honored (minus a $20 processing fee).  NO REFUNDS will be given for a student cancellation made less than seven (7) days in advance of the first day of the class.

Class Cancellations (Weather)
In the event of inclement weather, CTAC-TC will announce the cancellation on its website and phone system (231-941-9488). We will do our best to provide a make-up opportunity for the missed class. Refunds will not be given if the student is unable to attend the rescheduled session of class. Please note that CTAC-TC does not follow Traverse City Area Public School closings.

Student Absence
We are unable to offer refunds or make-up sessions for classes missed due to student absence.

Minimum Enrollment
Crooked Tree Arts Center reserves the right to cancel any class that does not meet its minimum student enrollment prior to the first class session. If a class is cancelled by CTAC for lack of enrollment, CTAC will offer a full refund to the student in the manner in which tuition was paid. (Cash payments will be refunded by check.)
