Gretchen Dorian will talk about the dynamic sport of iceboat racing, and share her work photographing iceboats and races all over the world. She’d like to encourage you to give it a try- by sharing tips about clothing and ice cleats, and opportunities to get a ride on an iceboat! You’ll also learn about the courses and rules, categories of iceboats, protocols for safety, and take home an information sheet with contacts, schedules, and links for more information.

Tresa Keys, Quilts of Valor Coordinator for Little Traverse Bay Quilters Guild, along with other representatives from the Guild, will share and talk about the quilts that they make for members of the community. The Guild designs, creates, and delivers quilted works of art to veterans, seniors, children, and those in hospice care, conveying warmth and compassion throughout the year. Their presentation will include a “trunk show” of examples.

Northern Michigan Winters: Past, Present, Future

Winter is a celebrated season in northern Michigan. Historically, snowfall and ice transform our area into a winter playground for downhill and cross-country skiing, ice fishing, skating, and snowshoeing. However, winter is changing – with more variable snowfall amounts, lakes taking longer to freeze, and Little Traverse Bay rarely freezing over. This talk, led by Freshwater Future’s Ann Baughman, will share information on how climate change is impacting northern Michigan winters and how we can prepare and adapt for changing conditions.

Rediscovering Petoskey’s Winter Carnival
Dylan Taylor, Former Executive Director at the Little Traverse History Museum

Petoskey’s Winter Carnival began in 1927, eventually becoming the “Michigan Winter Carnival, drawing thousands of visitors from around the state. The Carnival, held at the Winter Sports Park, featured figure skating, hockey tournaments, snowshoeing, bumpjumping, sledding, and skiing. At the height of popularity, the Carnival included elaborate ice thrones designed by Stanley Kellogg, a Winter Queen, a skating mule, and toboggan runs down Mitchell Street. Dylan will offer a richly illustrated talk about the history of this extraordinary event.
