Dreams Beyond Reason: Prints by Emily Legleitner

Emily Legleitner's large-scale relief prints center on the complex relationships between labor, ambition, and aspiration. A person's story is so often tied to their professional occupation, but does this reflect the essence of one's story? Exploring this question, and inspired by personal narratives and familial histories, Legleitner depicts comforting images of home pushed to distortion through perceived excess or exaggerated perspectives. The images reflect ideas of home, domesticity, work, and dreams realized or not, provoking viewers to consider the fleeting nature of time and the common human condition of longing.

    About the Artist
Emily Legleitner is an MFA candidate in printmaking at the University of Alberta. Originating from Flint, Michigan in the United States, Legleitner works within the expanded fields of print media, fibers, and metalworking. Her printed imagery is informed by lens-based inquiry, performance, and the body. Often, Legleitner uses portraiture to share auto-biographical narratives and self-reflections. She received a BFA in Studio Art from Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan. Her work has garnered critical acclaim throughout the Midwest and East Coast United States, winning the 2021 Prints Exhibition first prize at Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Gallery; Best of Show in the 2020 Body Building: Art of the Human Figure Exhibition at the Indianapolis Art Center; and Best of Show in the 2019 Michigan Greater Artists Exhibition at Midland Center for the Arts; among other awards. Her work has exhibited in numerous acclaimed print shows and been published in the London based print journal Printmaking Today (2018).
