Mercedes L. Bowyer, née Michalowski, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and raised in Michigan. She holds of Master of Arts in Museum Studies from the University of Oklahoma and has worked in the museum/nonprofit field for 25 years. After 10 years as the Executive Director for the Oliver Art Center in Frankfort, Michigan, Mercedes now serves as the Donor Engagement Director for the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation. In recent years, Mercedes has rekindled a creative practice centered on needlepoint, a skill learned at a young age thanks to her grandmother. She is determined to challenge the preconceived notion that needle arts are not fine art and do not have a place in the art world. Her fiber works are modern while paying homage to their history by using traditional techniques.
In this week's Coffee @ 10, Mercedes will discuss her creative practice as a "rogue needlepointer." Mercedes' work is included in CTAC's annual juried fine art show, Fields of Vision. As always, complimentary pastries and coffee are provided with support from Roast and Toast for our in-person audience.
