Description

Turn up the heat and join artist and metalsmith Leon Nash for this introductory course in blacksmithing. 

Participants will learn the tools of the trade and some fundamental processes for working with a forge.

Each student will make their own custom bottle opener.

All supplies included.

Leon Nash is a Northern Michigan-based artist. He received his undergraduate degree in sculpture from Northern Michigan University and his master’s degree in metals/jewelry from Arizona State University. He has been formally creating three-dimensional artworks for the past 15 years. Primarily, Leon uses ferrous and non-ferrous metal materials, but will use anything that best fits the needs of his concepts. Other materials may include: found object, wood, plastic or glass. In some of his latest work his visual concepts are driven from the language of wayfinding, which he uses as a metaphor for individuals who are in a transient stage in their lives. Naturally because of this inspiration arrows are a common theme throughout his work. 

Leon Nash currently teaches studio art and design classes for North Central Michigan College. His warm, approachable demeanor and expertise in his craft make his classes fun and inspiring for all skill levels.

Cancellation & Class Policies

COVID-19 Policy for Classes (after 4/1/22)

The following COVID-19 related policies are in place for classes that begin after April 1, 2022:

Face Coverings (updated 4/1/22)
As of April 1 and in accordance with the lifting of the mask recommendation by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, masks are not required for CTAC classes that begin after April 1*. However, should COVID-19 pandemic conditions change, CTAC will continue to follow local/state health department guidelines on masking, and will update class registrants via email and our website accordingly in the event of a change in requirements.

*Some classes may still require masking, and that will be noted clearly in the class description.

Illness
Students who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or who have recently tested positive should not come to class, and should follow the CDC guidelines on quarantining and masking.

Symptoms of Covid-19 include: Fever or chills; cough; shortness of breath or difficulty breathing; fatigue; muscle or body aches; headache; loss of taste or smell; sore throat; congestion or runny nose; nausea or vomiting; diarrhea.

Sanitation
Students and instructors should sanitize their hands upon class arrival and departure. Hand sanitizer and surface disinfectant will be available onsite.

 

Cancellation Policy for Multi-Day, Sequential-Day Adult Workshops

Cancellation
Crooked Tree Arts Center reserves the right to cancel any multi-day, sequential-day workshop that does not meet its minimum student enrollment 30 days prior to the first workshop session. If a workshop is cancelled by CTAC for lack of enrollment, CTAC will offer a full refund to the student in the manner in which tuition was paid. (Cash payments will be refunded by check.)

Student Withdrawal
Requests for cancellation by the student at least sixty (60) days prior to the first day of the workshop will be honored (minus a $20 processing fee).  Requests for cancellation by the student between thirty (30) and fifty-nine (59) days prior to the first day of the workshop will receive a 50% tuition refund . NO REFUNDS will be given for a student cancellation made less than thirty (30) days prior to the first day of the workshop.
