    DESCRIPTION

Watercolor batik is an amazing resist technique that combines painting with watercolor and melted wax on rice paper.  Batik creates a loose look that cannot be achieved with traditional watercolor methods.

This technique will change the way you paint. It is a process of painting in alternating layers of paint and melted wax. The step of cracking the wax and applying the last layer of paint creates the batik effect. The final step is removing the wax to reveal the beautiful painting you have created.

This class will begin with a planned design to lead you through learning the process with an explanation and demonstration at each step. We will then progress to designing our own paintings by planning the values and trying out color schemes. You will be given the opportunity to use a variety of textured and colored papers to experiment with during the second day of the workshop.

We will learn various ways of using a tjanting tool, exploring negative painting, and creating hard and soft edges. We will explore the use of collage and watercolor pencils with batik. We will learn helpful ways to repair holes and tears in the paper and how to tweak areas to improve your finished paintings.

You will also learn how to prepare your paintings for framing with a traditional mat. You will have the option of mounting a painting on a gallery-wrapped canvas for an amazing look that does not require a mat or frame.

Watercolor batik combines the fun and spontaneity of watercolors with the intricacy and vibrancy of wax resist to create beautiful artwork. Wax is used as a resist in painting, blocking the areas that are not intended to receive paint. The color is applied to the waxed area, creating a uniquely rich, warm and textured effect.
