    DESCRIPTION

Designed for students new to the encaustic medium or those wanting to expand their knowledge, this 2-day workshop provides a hands-on introduction to the materials, working methods, and safety fundamentals for working in encaustic. Students will leave the workshop with a solid technical foundation and the confidence to continue exploring encaustic beyond the workshop.

Sarah approaches her teaching with alternating between demonstrations and working time so students can see and discuss a process, and then immediately give it a try. This workshop will cover topics such as: basic painting techniques, color mixing, fusing methods, substrate selection, texture and line work, and surface refinement. If you have current pieces made in another medium, please bring for a discussion on how to translate or enhance the work with encaustic paints. All paints and tools/brushes are supplied.

    Encaustic

Encaustic painting has been used throughout history by many cultures. Today, this ancient form of art has evolved into a popular medium for contemporary artists.

Encaustic painting involves mixing wax and pigment to create a soft, pliable paint. Each layer must be fused to the next with heat. Layers of varying opacity are added and removed, creating a beautiful and distinctive surface.
