Docent Training @ CTAC Galleries - Petoskey
Oct 23 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

docent-training

We invite you to join us for coffee and light refreshments at a special docent training session, on Monday, October 23, from 1-3 pm.   The interactive training session will include:

  • a brief introduction to the goals of the program

  • tour of the 2017 Juried Fine Arts and Fresh AIR exhibits.

  • a studio session introducing the “hands on” project for student groups

  • informal conversations about engaging both children and adult in gallery tours

The training is intended to provide you with the information, strategies and and structure that you need to lead successful docent tours.  At the same time, you are invited to bring your own interests, stories, and experience to your tours.

You will have the opportunity to sign up for specific dates for student or adult tours.  You are also invited to attend if you aren’t sure or ready to volunteer for tours.

Docent tours are a vital part of our educational program.  Tours, offered at no charge, bring in children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience art, and adults seeking lifelong cultural engagement.

We value your participation in this program, and hope to see you on Monday.  If you are interested in attending, but are unable to attend the training, contact Megan DeWindt, Program Director, megan@crookedtree.org or 231.347.1236 for alternative training arrangements.

Coffee @ Ten: Fresh AIR Artist, Bill Hosterman @ Gilbert Gallery, CTAC-Petoskey
Oct 24 @ 10:00 am – 11:30 am

Join us for our October edition of Coffee @ Ten with Bill Hosterman!

Bill  will talk about the relationship between his background and influential experiences and on his artwork. Through images and a verbal narrative, he will present an informative presentation about the importance of nature, travel, and language on his drawing and printmaking artwork.

About Bill Hosterman:

Bill Hosterman is a tenured Associate Professor in the Foundation Department at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI. He received his B.A. in Printmaking from Pennsylvania State University, and his M.F.A. in Printmaking from Indiana University. Hosterman channels his creativity into drawings that he hand-paints with watercolors.

“I make artwork about relationships – between land and water, and nature and human progress. Through my personal experiences and research into the habitat, landscape and human history of an area, I create images that explore how nature defines humans and they, in turn, define nature. I will use the specific landscape and flora and fauna of the [Good Hart] area as the subject matter for my drawings.”

Hosterman has participated in solo and group exhibitions across the country and overseas, and he has attended artist residencies in Gatlinburg, TN, Ontonagon, MI, and Sheridan, WY.  Bill was Crooked Tree Arts Center’s Artist in Residence in May and June of 2017.

First Fridays for Foodies: Blackbird Gardens @ CTAC Kitchen - Petoskey
Dec 1 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Join farmer and chef, Mike Everts in the CTAC Kitchen for our December First Fridays for Foodies cooking demonstration.

Mike Everts has operated Real Food Dream Kitchen and Blackbird Gardens just west of Petoskey for the past 29 years. His mission over the years has been to help build a strong, local food network through active participation both as a producer and caterer. To source as much clean, locally produced food as possible has been his goal.  To actually walk the walk, not just talk the talk. Thanks to his dedication, he has remained ahead of the curve with Farm to Table and Local Foods Catering, providing this alternative service to food conscious families and community members young and old.  Mike is also a regular vendor at CTAC’s weekly Artisans & Farmers Market, providing the Petoskey community with his fresh produce.

First Fridays for Foodies: Watta Cookie @ Kitchen, CTAC-Petoskey
Jan 5 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

terrimorgan-wattacookieHave you ever wanted to learn the secrets of bagel making? In this hands on class Watta Cookie owner Terri Morgan will be showing you how you can enjoy the authentic flavor of New York Style bagels without leaving your own kitchen. She’ll go over all the steps, from making the perfect yeasted dough, to hand rolling, and then boiling in barley malt for the chewy exterior, brown crust, and distinctive flavor of a New York classic!

Terri Morgan found her passion for baking when, as a child, she joined her grandmother in the kitchen, baking pies for local restaurants. She rekindled this passion when she returned to Northern Michigan in 2008, and started “Marie’s Old Fashioned Cookies” with her mother, bringing their baked creations to local farmer’s markets in Marie’s final years. Keeping the memory of both women alive, she founded “Watta Cookie!” in 2016, focusing on using fresh, pure, and organic ingredients to make treats that are as yummy as they are wholesome.

Crooked Tree Arts Center and the Petoskey District Library will present “First Friday for Foodies” culinary series in CTAC’s newly renovated commercial kitchen between 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM.  This event is free and open to the public.

Docent Training @ CTAC Galleries - Petoskey
Jan 22 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

docent-training

We invite you to join us for coffee and light refreshments at a special docent training session, on Monday, January 22, from 1-3 pm.   The interactive training session will include:

  • a brief introduction to the goals of the program

  • tour of the 2018 Juried Photography & Hand in Hand: Craft & New Technologies exhibits

Coffee @ Ten: Digital Culture & Technologies with Taekyeom Lee @ Gilbert Gallery, CTAC-Petoskey
Jan 30 @ 10:00 am – 11:30 am

We are excited to welcome Hand In Hand artist,  Taekyeom Lee, for our January edition of Coffee @ Ten.

About Taekyeom Lee
Taekyeom is an interdisciplinary artist although he prefers to introduce himself a designer using artist’s material and artistic sensibility. He is currently an Assistant professor of Graphic Design at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. He received an MFA degree in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has made three-dimensional type as a series of typographic explorations to strive challenge and seek a new way to create tangible type in three-dimensional space. As a part of research, he built a self-build 3D printer and designed his own paste extruders to produce intricate 3D ceramic type and objects. His research has drawn interest nationally and internationally. His interests in graphic design are not solely focused on unconventional typography but also explore a diverse aea of interests and experience like: artist book, ceramics, web design, lettering, digital fabrication, and art/design pedagogy.

His research explores unconventional methods of creating three-dimensional type with materials and techniques unique to type design — such as ceramics and desktop 3D printing. This research reflects on the process-uality of the digital fabrication and the unconventional typographic practices in the post-digital age. He has made three-dimensional ceramic type as a series of typographic explorations to strive challenge and seek a new way to create tangible type in three-dimensional space.

Digital culture and technologies currently yield a strong influence over many areas of artistic practices, typography included. Through technological convergence, new manufacturing processes using computer numerical control such as 3D printing, CNC milling, and laser cutting have broadened creative possibilities for artists and designers and perception of three-dimensional experience. Especially, 3D printing has become more refined, common, and accessible, as well as cheaper – finally, it came to our desktop space. These new technologies have provided new tools for pushing boundaries of the medium both in terms of concept and materiality. In the response to the movement, he built his own tools, a self-built desktop 3D printer and paste extruders, to produce 3D ceramic type made out of 3D Bézier curves drawn in CAD software. He has created 3D type with various materials from plastic to clay, precious metal clay and new techniques, specifically 3D printing to inspire and creatively empower art and design professionals.
