Call for Quilters! Intergenerational Quilting Project @ CTAC-Petoskey
Nov 27 2017 – Feb 7 2018 all-day

The goal of the project is to provide an intergenerational learning opportunity through the arts, while teaching area children about the Civil War.

The Learning Studio will be working with Public Schools of Petoskey Enrichment Coordinator, Kathy Slack, and her group of 18, fourth-grade language arts students.  These boys and girls were selected for the enrichment program based on their exceptional test scores.

This year, the project will use the text, Barbara Brackman’s Civil War Sampler. The text provides patterns for 50 quilting blocks, each with a lesson on its historical background and significance.  Crooked Tree Arts Center will provide fabric, pattern and lesson plan.

Each volunteer/mentor will work with a student to create a quilt block over the course of three set dates during the winter months at Crooked Tree Arts Center.   It is The Learning Studio’s hope, that the student and mentor will establish a relationship through sewing activities and letter writing that will not only be beneficial to the student, but to the mentor.

Interested quilters should contact Megan DeWindt or call 231-347-1236.

Making Authentic Abstract Paintings @ CTAC - Traverse City
Jan 22 @ 5:30 pm

Register by: January 15, 2018

Abstract art is one of the most misunderstood genres of painting, it is also one of the most difficult to execute successfully.

In this class we will explore what it takes to create authentic and original abstract paintings. We will consider where inspiration for this expressive work can be derived. We will also delve into how to work from a particular subject to get to a place of abstraction, as well as, working in a completely non-objective manner.

We will discuss composition and mark-making and spend some time looking at many different abstract paintings. To work abstractly often appears to be carefree and without rules or convention, but actually it follows all of the conventions we employ when we paint in what might be considered a traditional way.

This class will be helpful to any painter that wants to dig a little deeper into their painting process as well as those that have always wanted to explore the world of abstraction.

Coffee @ Ten: Digital Culture & Technologies with Taekyeom Lee @ Upper Level Carnegie Building, CTAC-Petoskey
Jan 30 @ 10:00 am – 11:30 am

We are excited to welcome Hand In Hand artist,  Taekyeom Lee, for our January edition of Coffee @ Ten.

About Taekyeom Lee

Taekyeom is an interdisciplinary artist, but he prefers to introduce himself as a designer using artists’ materials and artistic sensibilities. He received an MFA in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and currently holds a position as an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. His research explores unconventional methods of creating three-dimensional type with materials and techniques not traditionally related to type design — such as ceramics and desktop 3D printing. This research reflects on the process of digital fabrication and the unconventional typographic practices in the post-digital age. His typographic experimentation and explorations include creating three-dimensional, tangible type with his own custom-built 3D printer. His research has drawn national and international interest. His work in graphic design also explores a diverse area of interests and experience like artists’ books, ceramics, web design, lettering, digital fabrication, and art/design pedagogy.

Digital culture and technologies currently yield a strong influence over many areas of artistic practices, typography included. Through technological convergence, new manufacturing processes using computer numerical control, such as 3D printing, CNC milling, and laser cutting have broadened creative possibilities for artists and designers. 3D printing has become more refined, common, and accessible, as well as cheaper – and finally, it has come to our desktop space. These new technologies have provided new tools for pushing boundaries of the medium both in terms of concept and materiality. In the response to the movement, Taekyeom built his own tools, including a custom desktop 3D printer and paste extruders, to produce 3D ceramic type made out of 3D Bézier curves drawn in CAD software. He has created 3D type with plastic, clay, precious metal clay, and new techniques, to inspire and creatively empower art and design professionals.

About David Haupt

David’s creative life started at a young age with his mother who was a talented artist. It was with her that he learned about concepts like; Rule of Thirds, Relative Size Perspective, and Color Theory. All through his high school years and beginning in college, his goal was to be a commercial artist. That changed with the advent of the personal computer.

Though he built his career on Information Technology (IT), he never strayed far from his creative endeavors.  Instead of pen & ink or paints, he used a camera. Even with his art background, he struggled at first to create images that carried impact. It wasn’t until he incorporated his art background to his photography that his work started to improve. In his teaching, David believes that learning should be fun. Photography is an expression of one’s self and that creativity is something we all are born with. We just need to learn to bring it out.
