Connections & Flow
Ragnar Avery and Calvin Boulter Photography
Flow and Connection brings together the work of photographers Ragnar Avery and Calvin Boulter in an exhibition that reflects both artistic dialogue and personal mentorship. First meeting in the mid-2000s through Traverse City’s former Art and Design Studio, the two developed a lasting friendship through their shared passion for photography—one that has deeply influenced each of their creative journeys.
Ragnar’s Flow features images inspired by moving water, with seascapes, skyscapes, and landscapes often imbued with elements of motion and rendered primarily in color. In contrast, Calvin’s Connections serves as a retrospective of 50 years of image-making, featuring predominately monochrome, warm-tone greyscale works that explore the subtle relationships between people, objects, and the spaces they inhabit.
Together, the exhibition highlights not only two distinct photographic perspectives, but also the connection between mentor and mentee—demonstrating how artistic influence, shared experience, and creative exchange can shape the evolution of an artist’s work over time.
