Young Writers Exposition

As part of the Crooked Tree Arts Center’s Youth Arts Festival, CTAC is pleased to collaborate with the Petoskey News-Review, the Bob Schulze Fund for Creative Writing at the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, McLean and Eakin Booksellers of Petoskey, and Walloon Writers Review to present the 15th Annual Young Writers Juried Exposition.

The Young Writers Expo showcases student writing in a juried competition.  Crooked Tree Arts Center partners with the Petoskey News-Review to publish the winning poetry and prose at each level, Elementary, Middle and High School.  A reception is held where awards and certificates are given out and students are encouraged to read their work aloud.

Prizes

Awards are given to 1st (The Bob Schulze Award), 2nd, and 3rd place winners at each level, Elementary, Middle and High School.

High School:

  • Bob Schulze Award for Poetry and Prose: $100,  medal, journal, and McLean & Eakin gift card
  • 2nd Place in Poetry and Prose: $75, medal, journal, and McLean & Eakin gift card
  • 3rd Place in Poetry and Prose: $50, medal, journal, and McLean & Eakin gift card
  • Honorable Mentions: certificate and ribbon

Middle School:

  • Bob Schulze Award for Poetry and Prose: $100, medal, journal and McLean & Eakin gift card
  • 2nd Place in Poetry and Prose: $75, medal, journal and McLean & Eakin gift card
  • 3rd Place in Poetry and Prose: $50, medal, journal and McLean & Eakin gift card

Published Student Work

The Petoskey News-Review will publish winning student work the evening before the Awards Reception.

Petoskey News Review Date: May 5, 2017

New this year – all first place winners will have their work printed in the third edition of the Walloon Writers Review, set to print Fall 2017. All first place winners will receive a complimentary copy of the publication.


Awards Reception

Students, their families, and teachers are invited to attend an Awards Reception at Crooked Tree Arts Center.  Students will be given awards and/or certificates and be invited to read their work aloud.  Refreshments will be served from 12:00 – 2:00 PM during the Culinary Arts Showcase presented by the Petoskey High School hospitality program.

Reception Date & Time: The 2017 Young Writers Expo Awards Reception will be held from  11 a.m – 1 p.m., Saturday, May 6, 2017.


Entry Information

Who: Young writers in the Charlevoix-Emmet ISD (or home school students in Charlevoix or Emmet Counties) may submit one work of poetry or prose, or one of both.  Work must be submitted online.

Entry Window: The window for 2017 begins at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 4 and ends at 5:00 p.m. Friday, April 14.

Student Work Requirements:

All poetry and prose must be original pieces of writing.  We cannot accept writing compiled from the works of others.

  • Prose work may be fiction or non-fiction.  All prose work is limited to 1,000 words or fewer.  All work must be titled.
  • All poetic forms are acceptable.  All works of poetry are limited to 500 words or fewer.  All work must be titled.
  • All work must be submitted to CTAC by a teacher, principal, or parent.
  • All work must be submitted online using the link below no later than 5:00 p.m., Friday, April 14, 2017.

YOUNG WRITERS EXPOSITION 2017 – SUBMISSIONS

Online submission to the 2017 Young Writers Exposition will open on Tuesday, April 4, 2017.
