CTAC’s 20th Annual Young Writers Exposition: Call for Young Writers!

This spring, Crooked Tree Arts Center is once again hosting the Young Writers Exposition as part of the annual Youth Arts Festival.

In conjunction with the Petoskey News-Review, the Bob Schulze Fund for Creative Writing at the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, McLean & Eakin Booksellers, Walloon Writers Review, and the Little Traverse Literary Guild, CTAC is putting out the call for young writers. Elementary, middle, and high school students who attend schools served by the Char-Em ISD (or home school students in Charlevoix or Emmet counties) may submit one work of poetry or prose, or one of each, to the exposition.

Winning writers of all age groups receive a medal, journal, and McLean & Eakin Booksellers gift card, while also having their work published in the digital Petoskey News-Review. Middle and high school winning writers receive monetary prizes as well: 1st place - $100 (Bob Schulze Award); 2nd place - $75; and 3rd place - $50. All first place writers will get their work printed in the Petoskey News-Review and the 2023 edition of the Walloon Writers Review. The Little Traverse Literary Guild will give two $500 “Best in Show” awards – the Hanna-Renkes/Jan Smith Literary Award – to high school students for poetry and prose.

All work for the Young Writers Exposition must be submitted online by a parent or teacher between Monday, March 14 and Friday, March 25, at 5 p.m. The submission page is located under Teacher Resources on the Petoskey portion of CTAC’s website. Prose pieces are limited to 1,000 words and poetry pieces are limited to 500.

Winning writers will be announced on Wednesday, April 6 and invited to attend the Youth Arts Awards Ceremony taking place on April 27 to receive their awards. Announcement time to follow – please check crookedtree.org for event updates.
