Artist Profile
Nima Hatfield
My name is Nima Hatfield. I was born in South Bend, Indiana, where my father taught me art at a very young age from his grand father, Edward Basker's, sketchbooks. I found my interest primarily focused on arts at a young age, and so my mother afforded me private lessons when I was 16 years old, where I learned oil painting and expanded my knowledge on drawing portraits.
In college I found traditional perspectives and demands not to be in my wheelhouse at the time, and my father died so I decided to drift from art for 6 years. When I was 25 (2015) my soul sang to pick up the paint brush again, and after that I never stopped. In South Bend my art was on display at a Dance Studio and Gallery (now closed), hair salons, and coffee shops.
Eventually I began live painting at music and charity events in 2016-2021, then we moved to Northern Michigan where I got to be a hermit and cultivate my craft more. I got so inspired by the nature surrounding me, the paradise of sprawling lakes and forests. I have always been inspired by nature but... as we know, Michigan is quite different from Indiana.
In 2025 I got invited to join the Northern Michigan Plein Air painters group and my life has been drastically improved in a such a positive way. I have not only found a way to connect with other amazing artists; which has always been so important to me, but I got to learn a skill I have always wanted to develop, but never thought I could.
Now I look at the world around me and say "I KNOW I can paint that."
I am so grateful for the Northern Michigan Art Community, the expansive wonderland we get the pleasure to enjoy every day, and the inspiration and connection it brings.
