Artist Profile

Lori Sikkema

I am a self-taught artist, who began drawing and creating at an early age.  I became an avid quilter (a.k.a fabric hoarder) in 2004, but it wasn't until I combined my love of fabric and the freedom and creativity of art quilting that I discovered my true passion for fabric collage.

Since 2014 I have been using fabric and thread as my medium to create realistic, photo inspired fabric collage portraits.  A variety of fabrics, carefully selected for their colors, patterns and values are cut and layered, shifted and blended to create a realistic collage image.  From a distance, the subtle changes in value create a "painted" effect, but a closer look reveals hundreds of small fabric pieces, nestled together to create a highly detailed portrait.  The unexpected prints, textures and patterns of the fabrics add an element of surprise and help further tell the story.  While I am always curious and tempted to try new techniques, I love the challenge and simplicity of using only fabric and thread.
