Artist Profile
Julia MacLachlan
Location: Traverse City, MI
The creative arts have always been a passion of mine, starting with sewing clothes when I was a child. Later, making things provided a useful counterbalance to my career as a materials scientist in the automotive industry, which involved a lot of destructive testing. My metalsmithing journey began in 2003 with classes at the Toledo Museum of Art, and I have continued my education with classes and workshops around the country (although the last few have been via Zoom). I set up Calico Metals Jewelry as a business in 2008. I work primarily in sterling silver, often combined with semi precious gemstones and freeform cabochons. I focus on techniques such as cuttlebone, broom & found-object casting that produce unique pieces, as well as limited run designs from lost wax carving. After many vacations in the Traverse City area, we made the move to the Old Mission Peninsula in 2019 and are enjoying both the outdoor activities and the arts scene here. The beauty of the area is a constant source of inspiration for my work.
