FILM: THE DIVING BELL & THE BUTTERFLY
May 7 -9, 2008
From 7:30pm To 9:30pm
Event City: Petoskey MI
Topic: Film
Here's the information on this week's film, "The
Diving Bell and the Butterfly".
-Craig Stutzky
Petoskey Film Theater
IN BRIEF: May 7 & 9, 7:30 pm
"THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY" Rated PG-13
2007; 112 min.(French w/ subtitles)Petoskey Public Library,Carnegie Building. Donations appreciated PFT Movie Hotline: 758-3108
The Petoskey Film Theater will be showing the French film "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" (PG-13) on Wednesday and Friday, May 7 and 9, 7:30 pm at the Carnegie Building (old Petoskey Library). Donations are appreciated. "Diving Bell" won the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Celebrated painter and filmmaker Julian Schnabel's
third feature finds him reaching new artistic heights with this audacious and personal biopic, based on the best-selling memoir of the same name. The film tells the remarkable tale of Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu Amalric), the world-renowned editor of French ELLE magazine, who suffered a stroke and was paralyzed by the inexplicable "locked in" syndrome at the age of
43. The seemingly claustrophobic story of a man
imprisoned in his paralyzed body becomes a dazzling and expansive movie about love, imagination, and the will to live.
Bauby's only way of communicating with the outside
world was by blinking with one eye, and after several dedicated helpers--a string of impossibly beautiful women (Emmanuelle Seigner, Marie-Josee Croze, Olatz Lopez Garamendia, Anne Consigny)--helped him to speak through this seemingly irrelevant gesture, he began to produce the words that would form his memoir. Along the way, as he swam in and out of consciousness, memories from his past swelled into the present, resulting in a cinematic experience that is at once heartbreaking and hopeful. Schnabel somehow manages to convey Bauby's internal life with remarkable clarity, employing first-person perspective, striking cinematography (by the always great Janusz Kaminski), and Amalric's pained, life-affirming monologues. The result is a wholly original experience, a painful and tender portrait of a life that is made all the
more exhilarating because of its close proximity to death. Schnabel has created a movie as engrossing and hypnotic as a thriller, a movie that wrestles with mortality yet has stubborn streaks of dark humor and eroticism, that portrays a man who overcomes unimaginable obstacles but refuses to paint him as a saint--he's crafted an intimate visual poem, a humble
sonata about life at its most fragile.

Noel Coward’s delightfully, improbable farce, takes place in the living room of the home of successful British novelist Charles Condomine and his second wife, Ruth. They have invited Dr. and Mrs. Bradman over for a séance with Madame Arcati, who claims to be a psychic medium. All are highly skeptical of her ability to reach “beyond the grave”, however, they humor her so Charles can get material for a book he is researching. Everyone, including Madame Arcati, is completely taken by surprise when the ghost of Charles spoiled and selfish first wife, Elvira, actually appears. And even more troubling, she refuses to return to the spirit world. Charles soon realizes the dangers of dabbling in the occult when he discovers that Elvira is hatching a diabolical plot that involves murder! What follows is a wacky romp through this world and into the next, complete with surprising twists and crazy results.
